A jilted lover stalked and shot his ex-girlfriend and her new beau, ignoring the woman’s desperate pleas for mercy early Saturday outside a seedy Bronx motel.

Joseph Kernizan, 42, was waiting when the couple emerged from the Holiday Motel around 3:10 a.m., and he blasted more than two dozen bullets at the helpless duo, witnesses and police said.

“Don’t do it! Don’t do it!” wailed Tracy Bennett, 38, before the shooter gunned down the twosome in the parking lot. The slain woman had an order of protection against Kernizan, police sources said.

Bennett and her boyfriend, Wayne Hamilton, 50, were about to leave in her white Toyota Camry when Kernizan sprinted out of the darkness and opened fire, the sources said.

Hamilton hopped from the passenger seat and tried to escape the hail of bullets that cut him down near the motel office, sources and witnesses said. Kernizan then turned his pistol on the weeping Bennett as she stood by her parked sedan, its motor still running, near Room 104. The doomed woman pleaded for her life before he opened fire.

“I looked out my window and saw a lady standing there,” said Ricky Gugliotta, who was staying in a nearby room with some friends celebrating a pal’s birthday. “She was begging him not to shoot her, but then he shot her twice and she went down.”

Both Bennett, of Elmont, L.I., and Hamilton, a Milwaukee reggae musician known as Captain Barkey, died at the scene, police said.

Sources said the couple was in the process of checking out of the hot-sheets motel, where a two-hour stay between 4 a.m and 6 a.m. goes for $80. Their luggage was still inside Room 25.
Witness Damone Jackson, 38, said the shooter was bouncing nervously around the parking lot before he opened fire.
“I saw the guy running around. He was dancing all over the place,” Jackson said. “Then, I heard the shots. It sounded like about 30 shots. It was like two clips worth.”

Investigators said Kernizan sped away from the scene in a blue Honda sedan and was still at large Saturday.
Bennett’s neighbors said they often heard her and her ex-beau screaming at each other — and cops were regularly called to the tidy two-story home.

“We always heard them fighting,” said Carolina Manzano, 32, who described Bennett, a mother of three, as a sweet woman who was seen leaving her house every morning in nurse scrubs. But her ex-boyfriend appeared to live a much different lifestyle, staying out all night and often returning with different flashy cars. Kernizan, described as short and heavyset, told neighbors he opened a club in West Hempstead.

“He was always acting suspicious,” Manzano said, adding that Bennett had a daughter in her late teens and a son and daughter between the ages of 8 and 10.

Hamilton, who grew up on the island of Jamaica, flew into the city Friday night to meet up with his old pals, according to a friend.
Married with kids, Hamilton had known Bennett for 18 months, said pal Natchelous Demus, 37.

Hamilton was seen earlier in the night at Memories Lounge near East Gun Hill Road, with a woman in a black top and tight black pants.
They were lovers,” Demus said. “He was a joyful dude. I don’t know why that happened, man. I can’t believe.”

The motel, which sits on a service road of the New England Thruway, has been wrapped in crime scene tape before.

Suspect Sought In Motel Slaying

Police on Sunday were hunting for a 42-year-old man who is accused of fatally shooting his ex-girlfriend and a celebrated reggae artist as the two were checking out of a Bronx motel along the New England Thruway.

Joseph Kernizan was allegedly waiting in the parking lot of the Holiday Motel shortly after 3 a.m. Saturday morning as Tracy Bennett and Wayne Hamilton were getting into a car, a law-enforcement official said.

Ms. Bennett, 38, and the suspect have two children and had been living together on Long Island, a law-enforcement official said. She had taken out an order of protection against Mr. Kernizan in August.

According to surveillance video recovered at the scene, Ms. Bennett and Mr. Hamilton were getting into her white sedan when the suspect blocked it with his car, the official said. Mr. Kernizan then allegedly got out of the car with a gun and fired two shots at the white sedan, the official said

As Mr. Hamilton, 50, was trying to escape, the camera shows Mr. Kernizan allegedly chasing him down a small walkway firing several shots in his direction, striking him in the torso, the official said.

The camera then shows Mr. Kernizan returning to the parking lot and allegedly shooting Ms. Bennett once in the face, the official said. After she fell to the ground, he allegedly stood over her and continued shooting, striking her several times in the head, face, back and chest.

Mr. Kernizan then returned to Mr. Hamilton, who can be seen crawling away, and fired at him several more times, striking him in the head, before fleeing, the official said. He was last seen driving southbound on the thruway.

Police on Sunday described Mr. Kernizan as 5-foot-5 and 220 pounds. He has an extensive criminal record including robbery, assault and criminal firearms possession.

Mr. Hamilton, whose stage name is "Captain Barkey," had been part of the Jamaican reggae scene since the late 1980s, said Ralston Barrett, who served as his manager from 1999 to 2002.

Mr. Hamilton, who lives in Milwaukee, had played a show in the city earlier that night.

He got his break in the late 1990s with the recording of "Go Go Wine," which would go on to be a chart hit.

He followed with a handful of other hits including "Bun Fi Bun," making him a mainstay on the circuit into the early part of the century.

"He was an all-in-all good guy, a very humorous guy," Mr. Barrett said. "His music was kind of different. He did more light-hearted topics."

"It's unbelievable. I still can't believe it," Mr. Barrett said.

A popular figure in the Haitian music industry, on the run from detectives who wanted to talk to him about the recent murder of his ex-girlfriend and her boyfriend, shot himself to death in a Northeast Miami-Dade apartment Tuesday night, as police closed in on the building
New York City police think Joseph Kernizan, a music promoter, gunned down Tracy Bennett and her lover, veteran Jamaican dancehall artist Captain Barkey in the parking lot of a Bronx motel Saturday.
The U.S. Marshals’ fugitive taskforce followed Kernizan’s trail from New York to a two-story apartment building on Northwest 157th Street and Second Avenue, near the Golden Glades interchange, said Barry Golden, a spokesman with the Marshals Service. Police feared he was preparing to flee to his native Haiti.
Golden said marshals and police arrived at the quadruplex at 10:14 p.m. Tuesday.
"We surrounded that location from all sides. We pulled in one of our vehicles, we had lights and a P.A. and we asked for residents of the apartments to step outside," he said.
At one point, investigators saw Kernizan stick his head out of a ground-floor apartment window, Golden said. He then attempted to run out a back door, but when he saw police officers he shut the door and locked it, Golden said.
Minutes later, a man who had been inside the apartment with Kernizan came out, and police heard three shots. Officers shattered a back window to enter the one-bedroom apartment.
"When we went in, he was dead" on the floor from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, Golden said. Police say they found three handguns and two loaded AK-47 assault rifles at the scene.
Kernizan, 42, also known as “Country,” was the New York promoter of NuLook, a well-known and popularkonpa band on the Haitian music scene. Police began the hunt for him after he was pointed out by witnesses as the man behind Saturday’s killing of Bennett, 38, and Barkey, 50. Kernizan is the father of two of Bennett’s three children, and she was often seen at his shows, friends of the couple say.
Born Joslyn Hamilton, Barkey is best known for the mid-‘90s dancehall reggae hits Go Go Wine and Bun Fi Bun. Followers of dancehall music say Barkey’s 2010 single She Nah Lef Joe, in which Barkey sang in Jamaican patois that his life was over because of cheating, was about the love triangle involving himself, Bennett and Kernizan. Barkey had a wife in Milwaukee, according to news reports.
Golden said Bennett had a restraining order against Kernizan for stalking her.
On Wednesday, residents in the building where Kernizan took his life said they were surprised at the police activity in an otherwise quiet neighborhood.
Niyah Garnett said she heard a gunshot while standing outside the police perimeter Tuesday night. She said police did not allow residents into the complex until after 3 a.m.
“The guy who lived in the apartment was quiet, he’d come and go. I don’t know his friend who died,” she said.
The news of Kernizan’s death has shaken Haitian music fans, who described him as a nice guy and loving father. He had recently opened a club in the New York area. NuLook, which he promoted, has a huge following in South Florida, where for the past several years they were the featured band for the annual gala at Notre Dame d’Haiti Catholic Church, basically volunteering their talents.
"He was a good asset to the Haitian music market in New York," said Rodney Noel, owner of Moca Cafe and Lounge in North Miami and the promoter of South Florida’s largest Haitian music festival, Miami Compas Fest. "He used to have at least five parties a year that drew between 1,500 and 2,000 people."
Noel said while the two weren’t close friends, they knew one another and spoke occasionally.
"We have a small market, everybody knows everybody," said Noel, who added, "It is really sad. My heart goes out to all of the families involved, especially his kids. They are the real victims here, the 8- and 10-year-old."
